Non-university committees

Dr. McDougall was involved in various committees dedicated to the advocacy of Canadian literature. They are: the Consultative Group on Scholarly Publishing in Canada, the Governor's General Awards Committee, and the Canada Council-Periodicals Committee. The series consists of correspondence, reports, programs, and critiques that Dr. McDougall accumulated while participating on these committees.

University Committees (1957-1982)

Series consists of minutes, correspondence, proposals, appendices, statistics, critiques, lists, and newsletters that Dr. McDougall accumulated while participating in the various committees.

Dr. McDougall participated in University committees during his years at Carleton College, later Carleton University. Such organizations have been the English Ph.D. Committee, Discipline Group for English Committee, Centennial Committee, Carleton Library Project-Reprint Committee, Interfaith Committee and other University affiliated committees.

Literary conference material

Series consists of correspondence, essays, programs, reports, notes, maps, flyers that Dr. McDougall accumulated and created in his various roles as participant, speaker and Co-Director.

Dr. McDougall attended several conferences that discussed the various aspects of Canadian Literature. The conferences Dr. McDougall attended were the Ontario Library Association, Humanities Association of Canada, National Federation of Canadian University Students, Conference on Editing Problems, Conference of the Canadian Novel, Conference on Biography and Canadian Literature.

Canadian Association for Commonwealth Literature and Language Studies

Series consists of correspondence, circulars, membership lists, committee documents, newsletters, clippings and conference programs that Dr. McDougall created and accumulated while he was a member and when he held the post of International Chairman. Series also consists of material from Queen's University. Queen's University debated whether or not to establish an Commonwealth and Comparative Studies undergrad program and asked Dr. McDougall for a letter of recommendation.

This organization is the Canadian branch of the International Organization. The Association for Commonwealth Literature and Language Studies encourages the study and research in Commonwealth literature, languages and related fields. The Association encourages comparative studies such as the study of the relationship between English and indigenous literatures and languages.

Institute of Canadian Studies

Series consists of minutes, proposals, candidate lists, correspondence, and letter log created and accumulated by Dr. McDougall while he was Director of the Institute for Canadian Studies. The series includes a report to the University College, University of Toronto about establishing a Canadian Studies undergrad at University College, University of Toronto.

The Institute of Canadian Studies was established in 1957 as an administrative unit of the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences of the Faculty of Arts and Science. In 1963, when the University reorganized into four faculties, the Institute of Canadian Studies became part of the Faculty of Arts, where it remained until 1976. When the Faculty of Arts separated into two faculties, the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Social Science, the Institute of Canadian Studies joined the Faculty of Arts. In 1992, the Institute became the School of Canadian Studies.

Published material

Series consists of book reviews that Dr. McDougall wrote for numerous publications such as the Queen's Quarterly and the Dictionary of Canadian Biography, among others. Series also contains prefaces for books that he edited and an account of his years with the Seaforth Highlanders. There is correspondence concerning royalties on his publications and other related subjects. There are drafts, clippings of book reviews and program publication proposals.

Course material

Series consists of course notes, syllabuses, reading lists for upper year Canadian and American Literature classes and research notes. Research notes are on assorted authors and publications that Dr. McDougall consulted for his lectures. Research notes are handwritten in pen on index cards. Series also includes an Interdisciplinary Seminar titled "The Angry Thirties," that Dr. McDougall chaired. The Seminar discussed the significance of the Depression on Canada.

The University began instruction in 1942. In 1952, the Department of English Language and Literature was created as a unit of the Faculty of Arts and Science. In 1957, the Department joined the Division of the Humanities and Social Sciences of the Faculty of Arts and Science. In 1963, English Language and Literature became a department of Division I of the Faculty of Arts. English became part of the reconstituted Faculty of Arts in 1976. Dr. McDougall began teaching English at University College, University of Toronto in 1947. He became Lecturer in 1950 and Assistant Professor in 1954. In 1957, Dr. McDougall joined the English Department at Carleton University. He became a Full Professor in 1961.

Lecture material

  • Series consists of lecture material created by Dr. McDougall when he was Visiting Professor at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland and the University of Mysore, India.
  • Cassettes contain interviews conducted by Dr. McDougall for his research as well as reading some works done by Canadian poets such as Duncan Campbell Scott and Earle Birney.

Professional correspondence

Series consists of recommendations written by Dr. McDougall for students and colleagues for various stages of advancement such as graduate school, promotion and other honors. Series also includes correspondence between Dr. McDougall and Dr. Claude Bissel, among others. There is correspondence about Dr. McDougall becoming a visiting professor at other universities and correspondence concerning his publications. There is correspondence from the Council of Canadians and correspondence with J.G. McClelland Publishing Company about the New Canadian Library Series.
