Canadian RCMP- part of the UN mission responsibilities was to assure security for the electoral process and peaceful withdrawal of South African troops from Namibia and from their engagement in the civil war in Angola. Thus, the UN brought in soldiers, police, electoral experts and others to manage its various tasks. In general the retreat was without incident or as remarked by a Canadian solider: "boring". To keep busy a group of Canadian soldiers organized a mechanics workshop for Namibians.
