Correspondence

This sub-series consists of correspondence between Centre for Editing Early Canadian Texts staff and Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) staff pertaining to grants administered by SSHRC and applications for SSHRC funding.

CEECT regularly corresponded with Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council staff from 1981-1995 regarding its applications and grants for funding.

Steering Committee

This sub-series is comprised of minutes of the CEECT Steering Committee.

The Steering Committee originally consisted of six members: Mary Jane Edwards, Mary Durance, Jeremy Palin, Sydney Wise, Robert Laird, and Robert McDougall. In later years, the Committee was expanded to include other Carleton University faculty such as Thomas Ryan, Carl Amberg, Naomi Griffiths, Ian Cameron, and Dennis Forcese. The Committee's objective was to establish the administration and funding of the CEECT editorial project. Tasks included selection of texts and determining the editorial principles and procedures for CEECT. The Committee convened every second week 1979-1982, at which time the Committee was dissolved and replaced by the Editorial Board.

Parks Canada

This sub-series consists of records created and accumulated by Herb Stovel related to Parks Canada. Stovel worked on contracts for Parks Canada, which included work on the Rideau Canal corridor, as well as the development of workshops for the Federal Heritage Buildings Review Board, and a Code of Practice for managers of federal heritage buildings.

This sub-series consists of reports, management plans for historic sites, documents from the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada, publications, brochures, and drafts of the Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada.

International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS)

This sub-series consists of records created and accumulated by Herb Stovel during his involvement with ICOMOS and ICOMOS Canada, which spanned much of his career. Stovel was involved with ICOMOS in several capacities, including as Secretary-General of ICOMOS International from 1991 to 1993, and as President of ICOMOS Canada from 1993-1997. He was also a frequent consultant to ICOMOS and the UNESCO World Heritage Centre.

This sub-series includes documentation relating to the Nara Document on Authenticity, ICOMOS committee meetings and general assemblies, and World Heritage nominations and monitoring missions.

Teaching and Instruction

This sub-series consists of records created and accumulated by Herb Stovel during his time as an instructor at the the University of Vermont, Université de Montréal, Carleton University, and the University of Victoria.

This sub-series also includes material for workshops and guest lectures delivered to international, national, and local organizations.

Association for Preservation Technology International (APT)

This sub-series consists of records created and accumulated by Herb Stovel during his work for the Association of Preservation Technology International. Stovel served as the President of the Association for Preservation Technology from 1989 to 1991.

This series consists of correspondence, documents, and memos related to APT conference planning and APT committee meetings.

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)

This sub-series consists of records created and accumulated by Herb Stovel during his work with the UNESCO World Heritage Centre and the Canadian Commission for UNESCO.

The sub-series consists of meeting notes, state of conservation reports, correspondence, conference programmes, reports commissioned by UNESCO, and documentation related to World Heritage meetings.

Ontario Heritage Foundation (OHF)

This sub-series consists of records created and accumulated by Herb Stovel during his time working as an architect and project director for the Ontario Heritage Foundation (OHF).

The records in this sub-series included documentation and slides related to OHF properties and sites, correspondence and memos, conservation guides, and Heritage Trust Committee documents.

Heritage Canada Foundation (HCF)

This sub-series consists of records created and accumulated by Herb Stovel during his time working for the Heritage Canada Foundation (now the National Trust for Canada). Stovel was the Assistant Director of Main Street Canada from 1984-1986, and the Director of Education from 1986-1988.

The records in this sub-series includes manuscript drafts, documentation, and training material related to the Main Street Canada program.

International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM)

This sub-series consists of records created and accumulated by Herb Stovel during his involvement with the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM).

In 1985, Stovel began lecturing and teaching workshops for ICCROM. He also served as the Director of the ICCROM Heritage Settlements Unit from 1998-2004. The documents included in this sub-series consists of notes, correspondence, and records related to courses delivered by the Heritage Settlements Programme, including ITUC (Integrated Territorial and Urban Conservation) and the ARC (architectural conservation course) programme, and other activities.

Stovel authored two well-known ICCROM publications on risk preparedness for world cultural heritage and conservation of living religious heritage.
