Ontario Business College

This sub-series is comprised of various practice and examination books belonging to Charles W. de Carle and John E. de Carle when they attended theOntario Business College, Belleville. This sub-series also includes various pieces of correspondence and publications.

Receipts

This sub-series is comprised of bills for sundries paid while collecting accounts at year end; they were bundled separately and included with the correspondence for the respective years.

School notebooks

This sub-series is comprised of various school notebooks of Charles W. de Carle and John E. de Carle, from when they attended the Rock School, the local common school in Elizabethtown Township, where it appears they studied basic accountancy, as well as their practice work from the Business College.

Archival research

The sub-series consists of a mixture of military documents regarding the Australian and Canadian armies. The sub-series also includes researched collected from the John Monash diary.

Canadian Corps research

The sub-series contains correspondence and war diaries primarily. Research collected from Sir Douglas Haig's diary, Du Cane memos as well as selections from the Bean and Monash collections. Rawlinson's diaries are also used.

Pre-December 1917

The sub-series consists of background information on World War I that Sydney Wise had collected. Included are articles, bibliographies, e-mail correspondence and groups and Internet articles relating to World War I. There are also clipped articles from original Military Affairs journals contained within this sub-series.

Chronology

The sub-series consists of war diaries collected between 1915-1918. Instead of being sorted by division, Wise had organized them in chronological order.

Division records

This sub-series consists of war diaries that Sydney Wise had separated by division. The war diaries look at divisions 1 through 4. The war diaries consist of in-depth information such as, location, date, hour and a summary of events and information. Another component of the divisional records is the summary of intelligence as well as operating orders. The summary of intelligence looks at such military aspects as, attitude of the enemy, artillery, trench mortars, machine gun and rifle fire, patrols, sniping, enemy movement, enemy defence and aircraft.

Aberdeen correspondence

This sub-series consists of incoming handwritten correspondence from suppliers in Aberdeen, Scotland to Lancelot, Leopold, Charles and Victor de Carle, regarding new orders as well as invoices for completed work. Most letters include detailed diagrams ('tracings') and some also have related bills of lading attached. This correspondence, from Gerrie & Nicol (1892-December 1895); Alexander Nicol (March 1896); Henderson & Webster (March 1897); Peter Gerrie (March 1897-1912); The British Granite & Marble Co. (April 1908); and William Edwards & Son (April 1914) dates from 1892 through to 1919. Contemporary newspaper clippings are attached to several letters.

Minor files: Autographs

This series consists of chronological and alphabetical collection of the signatures of prominent and chiefly Ukrainian individuals, in most cases these are signatures clipped from Batchinsky's letters received (some signatures were obtained through third parties). Examples include the autographs of D. Dontsov, Y. Chykalenko, S. Yefremov, L. Yurkevych, D. Doroshenko and M. Hrushevs'kyi. Some of the signatures are on unclipped letters that provide incidental information about the authors.
