Correspondence

This series consists of correspondence produced, received and accumulated by W. McAllister Johnson in the course of his professional life and activities at the University of Toronto, including: his own research and publications; supervision of graduate students; committee, strategic planning, and administrative duties; research travel, and program planning and development. Correspondence with faculty and Archives and Research staff at Carleton University is also included.

Artist dossiers: Les Peintres du Roi exhibition catalogue

This series is comprised primarily of photographs supplemented by some documents concerning the Reception Pieces (Painting) to the Acad?©mie Royale de peinture et de sculpture, arranged alphabetically from A to Z. The documents were used in the creation of "Les Peintres du Roi: 1648-1793" exhibition catalogue (Tours & Toulouse, 2000)

Historical associations, societies, and boards

The series consists of records created by Professor Wise as he participated in various associations, societies, and boards. The bulk of the series pertains to his involvement in The Canadian Historical Association (CHA), the Ontario Historical Society (OHA), Archeological and Historic Sites Board, and the Social Sciences Research Council of Canada. This series also documents Sydney Wise's induction into the Order of Canada (1989-1990).

Sydney Wise has been involved in various societies, boards, and associations throughout his career. His participation in such groups varied from general membership, to executive, vice president, president, chair, or council member.

RCAF history

The series consists of research drafts, Men in Arms lecture notes, research materials, and RCAF documents. These records were used in the preparation and writing of both Men in Arms: A History of the Interrelationships of Warfare and Western Society and Canadian Airmen and the First World War: Official History of RCAF.

Sydney Wise was a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force (1943-1945), and Director, Directorate of History, National Defence (1966-1973). Using this knowledge and military experience, Wise has authored numerous articles and books about the history of the RCAF and military history of Canada. Publications include the five editions of Men in Arms: A History of the Interrelationships of Warfare and Western Society, Storia sociale della guerra, Canadian Airmen and the First World War: Official History of the Royal Canadian Air Force, The Valour and the Horror revisited, and numerous articles on the same topic.
