History

ICCROM was created in 1956 by UNESCO as a result of a proposal at their general conference held in New Delhi in that same year, the goal of which was to establish an autonomous scientific intergovernmental organization. Austria was the first member state and the first General Assembly was held in 1960.

In 1959, the Centre was established in Rome, where it remains at the present day (2017).

Functions, occupations and activities

ICCROM was created as an intergovernmental organization dedicated to the preservation of cultural heritage around the world through training, information, research, cooperation and advocacy programmes. Its mandate is to enhance the field of conservation-restoration and raise awareness of the importance and fragility of cultural heritage, be it books, art, or monuments of history and science. Mandates/sources of authority

ICCROM's mandate is "to contribute to the worldwide conservation and restoration of cultural property by initiating, developing, promoting and facilitating conditions for such conservation and restoration" (Ibid). Its research and recommendations regarding conservation and heritage issues is carried out by a group of experts and scholars who promote training and initiatives in pursuit of its mandate.
