Biographical history

John William Foster was born on June 17th, 1942 in Regina Saskatchewan. He attended the University of Saskatchewan and graduated in 1962 with a Bachelor of Arts Honours (History), then went on to pursue his Master of Arts degree (History) at the University of Toronto in 1963, before completing his Doctor of Philosophy (History) at the University of Toronto in 1977 where he submitted and published his thesis: The Imperialism of Righteousness: Canadian Protestant Missions and the Chinese Revolution: 1925-1928 (1976/77). In between schooling he was employed by the United Church of Canada in the Division of Mission in Canada from 1970-1989 in Toronto, Ontario. And was the National Secretary (CEO) for OXFAM Canada, in Ottawa, Ontario (1989-1997). From years 2008-2011 he was an inter-disciplinary professor at Carleton University. Over the course of his academic career Foster has been a participant observer of Canadian-based international development NGO’s, other Canadian organizations that deal with the UN system and international human rights, and international solidarity movements that mostly focus on Latin America. As well, Dr. Foster has collaborated with researchers in Fredericton, Halifax, Toronto, and Ottawa to create a collective history of the Toronto-based Latin American Working Group (1965-97). Since 2010 John W. Foster has been teaching International Studies and Justice Studies at the University of Regina, and continues to do so whilst still based in Ottawa.

Custodial history

Material was transferred from John W. Foster to the Archives and Research Collections in December 2016 and November 2017.

Scope and content

Fonds consists of records created and accumulated by Dr. John William Foster. These records are represented by ten series: The Imperialism of Righteousness Thesis Research Materials (1892-1976); Academic Institutions (1957-2017); Common Frontiers Canada (1990-2000); OXFAM Canada (1987-1999); The North-South Institute (1992-2017); United Nations (1995-2011); Social Watch (1997-2011); Commonwealth Foundation (2002-2009); UBUNTU (2001-2009); and General Publications, Reports, and Speeches (1966-2009).
