Biographical history
Murdoch Maxwell MacOdrum was born in Nova Scotia in 1901. He studied at Dalhousie University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in 1923, proceeded to McGill University where he obtained a Master of Arts the following year. In 1925 he participated in a teachers exchange, which took him to Glasgow, where he received his PhD in English. Upon his return in 1927 he continued his studies at Harvard, and was thereafter appointed lecturer at Kings College, Dalhousie, and then at Queen's University. He was ordained as a Presbyterian minister in 1935 in Sydney Nova Scotia where he ministered until the end of 1939. MacOdrum began his career at Carleton College when he was appointed Executive Assistant to Dr. Henry Marshall Tory in 1944. The following year he was appointed Vice-President, and then President upon the death of Tory in 1947. Dr. MacOdrum was instrumental in the passing of the Carleton College Act by the Ontario Legislature in 1952. He would continue as President and Vice-Chancellor at Carleton College until his death in 1955.

Scope and content
This fonds is comprised of 3 series. Series 1 contains correspondence primarily to do with MacOdrum's time as a Presbyterian Minister in the Maritimes. There is also some personal correspondence relating to his time at Dalhousie University. Series 2 contains diaries of Maxwell MacOdrum, his father Donald MacOdrum, and one diary from Martha (Maxwell) MacOdrum. Series 3 contains material pertaining to Maxwell MacOdrum and the MacOdrum family. Contents include: 2 scrapbooks, 1 photo album, and ephemeral material.
