Scope and content

The series consists of documentation that outlines the planning, research, and development of Wise's work on RCAF history. These records include the chapter briefings for his book Canadian Airmen and the First World War: Official History of the Royal Canadian Air Force. The series also documents Professor Wise's trips to the US Military History Institute and his interest in the Shenandoah Valley Campaign 1862.

Sydney Wise was a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force (1943-1945), and Director, Directorate of History, National Defence (1966-1973). Using this knowledge and military experience, Wise has authored numerous articles and books about the history of the RCAF and military history of Canada. Publications include the five editions of Men In Arms: A History of the Interrelationships of Warfare and Western Society, Stoia sociale della guerra, Canadian Airmen and the First World War: Official History of the Royal Canadian Air Force, The Valour and the Horror Revisited, and numerous articles on the same topic.
